In L. A. Descanso Gardens, starts the Countdown to Spring Each February the world's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawny Phil, emerges from his long winter sleep in search of his shadow. Like those who look to the wisdom of this creature to predict the start of spring, we too anticipate the arrival of this most hopeful season. After all, spring brings a sense of renewal, of discovery, of playfulness, and of secrets revealed. ![]() This spring, stop by the Visitors Center and obtain a treasure map to the flowering plants of our Promenade. From the middle of March until late April, the Lilac Garden is a visual candy shop of color, with fragrance to match. Shrubs and trees send forth tender green foliage. Tightly furled rosebuds rise above drifts of glossy new red leaves. Would you like to search for the elusive and beautiful cuckoo bee? A stroll through the Gardens will reveal an array of fascinating and visually stunning pollinators, busy at work to keep the Earth healthy and beautiful. Springtime at Descanso is certain to revive a sense of wonder that brings out the child in all of us. ![]() A Trail For Everyone Walking can be a great physical exercise, a time for quiet reflection, something fun to do with friends and family - or all of the above when you step out on one of Descanso's numerous pathways. From gentle jaunts around the Gardens - or more challenging hikes - Descanso has a multitude of locations ripe to explore on foot. Here are some walking locations to consider this spring: For stunning views of the San Gabriel Mountains, climb up to Hope's Rock located near the Boddy House. This simple - but somewhat steep - walk starts at a rock stairway, weaves past an olive grove and Mediterranean garden, and ends at a peaceful large stone (Hope's Rock) that doubles as a seat. ![]() Nearby, the Chaparral Trail is a short but worthwhile winding pathway that was created in the early 1960s by a local Boy Scout troop. Climb past elderberry and toyon bushes to reach a small bench that's surrounded by native sages and chaparral. Find the trailhead near the California Native Garden or pick up a map at the Visitors' Center. In fact, the Visitor's Center has many pamphlets of self-guided walks such as Discovering Trees and The World of Roses. For more information, visit us at: www.descansogardens.org 1418 Descanso Drive.
